Andorra – design revealed for the Euro coins to be issued in 2014

Andorra made public the winning design for the 1 Euro Cent, 2 Euro Cent, 5 Euro Cent, 10 Euro Cent, 20 Euro Cent, 50 Euro Cent, 1 Euro and 2 Euro coins. The coins will be released into circulation starting 1st January 2014.

The agreement between the European Union and Andorra was that Andorra mint can put into circulation maximum 2.5 million Euro each year.

New Canadian Stamp Issue Dedicated to Robertson Davies

Canada Post announced they will issue a new stamp on August 28th, dedicated to the Canadian writer Robertson Davies.

The stamp illustrates a portret by Yousuf Karsh, framing an all-knowing academic figure, with his trademark beard worthy of a mythic god.

Robertson Davies was a novelist, playwright, critic, journalist, and professor, being one of Canada’s best known and most popular authors, and one of the most distinguished “men of letters”. Davies was also the founding master of Massey College, a graduate residential college associated to the University of Toronto.

Malta issued 2 new coins depicting Auberge de Provence

Central Bank of Malta issued today two new Euro coins depicting Auberge de Provence.
Auberge de Provence is a baroque building built in 1571 for the Knights of Malta. Nowadays it is the house of the Maltese National Museum of Archaeology.

The 10 Euro coin is made out of Silver 0.925 and the 15 Euro coin is made out of Gold 0.999. Both coins are minted by the Royal Belgian Mint.

Estonian Post Will Issue a New Stamp: St Catherine’s of Võru

Estonian Post announced a new stamp issue on July 24th dedicated to St Catherine’s of Võru church.

St Catherine’s of Võru was built in the years 1788–1792, being a contemporary with the city, and was finished on July 24, 1793. The church has two tower clocks – the smaller one weighing 460 and the bigger one 850 kg. In 2013 it is also the centenary of its organ built by the Kriisa brothers. Services are held inside the church on every Sunday and on at all the major festivities. St Catherine’s of Võru has also been included in the Travellers’ Churches program.

National Bank of Romania issued a gold coin to mark the 175th anniversary of Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu

National Bank of Romania will put on sale, starting 15th July, a gold coin dedicated to B. P. Hasdeu, to mark his 175th birth anniversary.

Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu (1838-1907) was an important Romanian philologist and writer. He was born in northern Bessarabia (now part of Ukraine), at that time part of the Russian Empire.

US Post Issues a New Stamp Series: New England Coastal Lighthouses

United States Postal Services announced  the issuance on Saturday, July 13,  of the New England Coastal Lighthouse Forever stamps.

The sixth issuance in the lighthouse series features five New England Coastal Lighthouses: Portland Head (Cape Elizabeth, ME); Portsmouth Harbor (New Castle, NH); Boston Harbor (Boston, MA); Point Judith (Narragansett, RI) and New London Harbor (New London, CT).

Portland Head

Portland Head was established in 1791, being Maine’s oldest lighthouse.

Portsmouth Harbor

Although citizens of Portsmouth Harbor had demanded a lighthouse as early as 1721, only 50 years later the Portsmouth Harbor’s first beacon was lit.

Boston Harbor

Boston Harbor Light it’s North America’s first true light station. It was built in 1716 because of the city’s business community urging.

Point Judith

Point Judith Lighthouse guards a dangerous area of the Atlantic, this area seeing many shipwrecks, even after the addition of the lighthouse.

New London Harbor is Connecticut’s oldest and tallest lighthouse, originally established in 1761.

New 100 Taka Commemorative Banknote Issued by Bangladesh

On July 9th, Bangladesh released into circulation a new 100 taka commemorative banknote, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Bangladesh National Museum.bangladesh100

Bangladesh National Museum is one of the largest museums in South Asia, having archaeology, classical, decorative and contemporary art, history, natural history, ethnography and world civilization sections. Ukraine issues new coin – 100th anniversary of the Kyiv Research Institute of Forensic Expertise

National Bank of Ukraine issued a new bimetallic commemorative coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the Research Institute of Forensic Expertise from Kyiv. It is one of the oldest Ukrainian institutions, being founded in 1913 as the Office for Forensic Science.

New Commemorative Coins Issued in Ukraine: 1025th Anniversary of Christianization of Kyivan Rus

On July 3rd, the National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation 3 new commemorative coins dedicated to the 1025th Anniversary of Christianization of Kyivan Rus, having the face values of 100, 20 and 5 hryvnia.

 The commemorative coins celebrate the introduction of Christianity as the state religion, which happened in the time of Prince Volodymyr the Great. According to the chronicles, the mass baptism of the Kyivan population took place in 988 at the spot where the Pochaina River fell into the Dnieper River. After this, Christianity became a dominant religion in the Kyivan Rus.

Latvia issued a coin to celebrate 150th birth anniversary of the composer Jāzeps Vītols

Latvia issued a coin to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the composer Jāzeps Vītols (1863-1948).

In 1918 he returned from Russia to the newly independent country of Latvia to create the Latvian National Opera. In 1919 he established the Conservatory of Music.
