Romania – Set of 3 coins to celebrate 175 years since the birth of Titu Maiorescu

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 16 February 2015, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) dedicated to the anniversary of 175 years since Titu Maiorescu’s birth.

The coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) in the set have the following technical characteristics:

Obverse of the gold coin: the image of Vasile Pogor Mansion in Iași, where the meetings of “Junimea” Society were held, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “100 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2015”.

Obverse of the silver coin: the image of Vasile Pogor Mansion in Iași, where the meetings of “Junimea” Society were held, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2015”.

Obverse of the copper-plated tombac coin: the image of Vasile Pogor Mansion in Iași, where the meetings of “Junimea” Society were held, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “1 LEU”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2015”.

Reverse (common to all coins made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac in the set) : the portrait of Titu Maiorescu, his birth and death years – “1840” and “1917” – and the inscription “TITU MAIORESCU” in an arc.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules. The sets of coins are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is of 150 sets of coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac).

The selling price is lei 2,050.00, VAT excluded, per set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac), including the leaflet.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins dedicated to the anniversary of 175 years since Titu Maiorescu’s birth are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The sets of coins will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.

Two new silver coins to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Doctors Gheorghe Marinescu and Ioan Cantacuzino

Obverse, the same for both coins, shows a partial depiction of the building of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, a composition illustrating medical research in Neurology and Microbiology, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue “2013” and “ROMANIA” inscribed in an arc.

Reverse of the first coin presents the portrait and name of Doctor Gheorghe Marinescu, founding father of the Romanian school of Neurology, and “150 DE ANI DE LA NASTERE” inscribed in an arc..

Reverse of the second coin shows the portrait and name of Doctor Ioan Cantacuzino, founding father of the Romanian school of Microbiology and “150 DE ANI DE LA NASTERE” inscribed in an arc.

The mint sets, with the silver coins housed in transparent plastic capsules, are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is 500 sets.

The selling price per set of two silver coins, including the leaflet, is lei 590.00 excluding VAT.

National Bank of Romania issued a gold coin to mark the 175th anniversary of Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu

National Bank of Romania will put on sale, starting 15th July, a gold coin dedicated to B. P. Hasdeu, to mark his 175th birth anniversary.

Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu (1838-1907) was an important Romanian philologist and writer. He was born in northern Bessarabia (now part of Ukraine), at that time part of the Russian Empire.

In 1918 he returned from Russia to the newly independent country of Latvia to create the Latvian National Opera. In 1919 he established the Conservatory of Music.

Romania – Silver coin to celebrate 140th birth anniversary of Lucia Sturdza-Bulandra

National Bank of Romania will put on sale a new silver coin dedicated to Lucia Sturdza-Bulandra.

Lucia Sturdza-Bulandra (1873-1961) was a famous stage actress. Shes was one of the greatest people of the Romanian scene and for almost 30 years she was a teacher at the Conservatory of Dramatic Art in Bucharest.

New Latvian Coin dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner

The coin “Richard Wagner” is issued by the Bank of Latvia is a dedication to the occasion of the 200th anniversary since the composer’s birth and a memorial to his active life period in Riga when he began to work at one of his important operas “Rienzi”.

Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883) was a genius of German music and served as main bandmaster at the Riga City Theatre from 1837 to 1839. Riga was the second city where in 1843, a few months after the premiere in Dresden,  there was a performance of “The Flying Dutchman”.

Kazakhstan – 120th birth anniversary of Magjan Zhumabayev

Today, 28th May, the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan issued a new nickel-silver coin commemorating 120 years since the birth of Mağjan Zhumabayev.

He was a Qazaq writer and pedagogue, one of the fathers of the modern Qazaq literature.

Jozef Karol Hell was a Hungarian mining engineer and inventor, known for inventing the water-pillar, mainly used today for oil extraction, and also for proposing the construction of the tajchy reservoirs around Banská Štiavnica.
