New Latvian Coin dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner

The coin “Richard Wagner” is issued by the Bank of Latvia is a dedication to the occasion of the 200th anniversary since the composer’s birth and a memorial to his active life period in Riga when he began to work at one of his important operas “Rienzi”.

Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883) was a genius of German music and served as main bandmaster at the Riga City Theatre from 1837 to 1839. Riga was the second city where in 1843, a few months after the premiere in Dresden,  there was a performance of “The Flying Dutchman”.

Flying Dutchman and Pequod (Moby-Dick) – Tuvalu silver coins

Perth Mint issued for Tuvalu two new 1 Dollar coins in the “Famous Ships That Never Sailed” serie.

One is the Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that foreshadow disaster to its viewers and was cursed to sail the seas forever. You may know the ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, its captain was David Jones (on the real legend the captain was mostly like Bernard Fokke).

The other coin is Pequod, a fictional whaleship from the Moby-Dick book, written by Herman Melville. The book’s story is about the Pequod, its crew (Captain Ahab, Ishmael, Queequeg, Peleg and others) and its mission to capture Moby Dick, a white sperm whale.
