Because of the Communism fall, only five of of the twelve planned ships were built, in the Northern Shipyard in Gdańsk. They can carry up to 9 T-72 tanks or 17 transport vehicles and 135 equipped troops. The ships were named after the chief cities of the Piast dynasty.

Flying Dutchman and Pequod (Moby-Dick) – Tuvalu silver coins

Perth Mint issued for Tuvalu two new 1 Dollar coins in the “Famous Ships That Never Sailed” serie.

One is the Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that foreshadow disaster to its viewers and was cursed to sail the seas forever. You may know the ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, its captain was David Jones (on the real legend the captain was mostly like Bernard Fokke).

The other coin is Pequod, a fictional whaleship from the Moby-Dick book, written by Herman Melville. The book’s story is about the Pequod, its crew (Captain Ahab, Ishmael, Queequeg, Peleg and others) and its mission to capture Moby Dick, a white sperm whale.
